How do I determine the depth of next doors footings
There are several ways this can be done – if possible a trial hole can be dug but that may be difficult if the building is detached from yours.
A query with the local building control office may give an indication as the building inspector is likely to be familiar with the buildings in the street, finally you should consider the age of the building, most older buildings have foundations that are much shallower than would be currently acceptable, it is quite probable that any standard residential building pre 1980 will have footings that are no more than a metre deep and prior to the sixties more likely 600mm or less.
If in doubt ask you neighbour if you can investigate the depth or serve a precautionary notice under section 6 of the Act, if you start work and then find you are going deeper you will have to stop, serve notice and follow procedure which will delay your works by at least a month.
